Dr. Julie Kanter Washko is a researcher and associate professor in the Division of Hematology & Oncology  at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. She received her MD from Tulane University and then completed her residency in pediatrics at the University of Colorado and a fellowship in pediatric hematology/oncology at Washington University.

Dr. Kanter focuses on improving the comprehensive care of persons with sickle cell disease throughout life and clinical and translational research to better understand and address issues in treatment and prevention of sickle cell disease. She is very committed to improving outcomes in sickle cell disease and reaching those impacted by SCD. She works closely with national partners including the American Society of Hematology and the NIH on sickle cell disease advocacy and research.
