In this program:

Gene expression profiling is another tool in the genetic testing toolkit. Watch as medical laboratory scientist Dr. Brandy Gunsolus explains what is examined in gene expression profiling and whether it can rule out health diagnoses.

Transcript

Leo Hesse:

Dr. Gunsolus, can you tell us what gene expression profiling is, and at this stage, is this a test that is ruling out diagnoses or providing my healthcare team with more specificity around something they already know?

Dr. Brandy Gunsolus:

So gene expression profiling is more looking at the cell itself and how those genes are working within the cell, just because you have a specific game doesn't necessarily mean that the gene is working, and so the expression profiling is looking to see...is that team functional? Is it working? What kinds of things are producing, and how is that working within the cell? We don't do a lot of this type of testing. It is not a commonly performed test, but it can be useful, especially if you've tried certain treatments over and over and they're not working, and it can be related occasionally to diagnostics when we're trying to figure out why is your body just not working right.

Leo Hesse:

Great, and so thank you for that.
